"The Dreamers" a collaborative
poem by Vian Nguyen and Amanda Johnston
2/19/2012
In celebration of
Black History Month, I collaborated with my brilliant poetry
apprentice, Vian Nguyen, to write a poem in honor of James
William Tanner, an African American soldier who served during
World War II and was stationed in Germany where he met his wife,
Irmgard. This poem was inspired by an interview with their
daughter, Dr. Debra Tanner Abell. Click on the PDF below to read
the poem. Visit the additional links to read more about African
Americans serving in Germany during World War II.
